Barbara Smith
I've been a clinical social worker for more than 25 years, and in that time I've worked in a variety of roles, including therapist, case manager, clinical supervisor and educator. For 17 years, I worked in a specialty clinic for people who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and related disorders. I've also worked with people experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, and life transitions. I work primarily from a cognitive behavioral framework. As a clinical social worker, I use a systems lens and involve families and social networks, and consider how culture shapes how we experience the world. I believe that people should be empowered by good information to improve their mental health. I help people find their strengths and develop strategies to get through difficult times. I meet people where they are, with non-judgement and warmth. I want to hear your story, and believe that there can be relief in the telling. That's the starting point. And then we can work together on the goals you set -- whether it's reducing your current emotional distress, finding a path forward through grief, or reaching the goals you set for yourself.
