I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner, board certified, who has been in practice for 28 years and had additional training thru Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. I have provided care in such settings as outpatient mental health clinics in rural and urban settings, prison facilities, outpatient and inpatient substance abuse treatment facilities, adult foster homes for those with developmental disabilities/mental illness, and psychiatric hospitals. The prospect of experiencing a change in our mental health is frightening, especially when there is a sense of losing control and our world is crashing in around us, as if, we have no place to find refuge. We all have the potential to be confronted by anxiety, depression, or other changes in our mental health that may require finding support, guidance, and direction from a provider that returns us to a sense of equilibrium. I believe we should treat each individual with dignity, respect, and kindness and to reinforce the importance of self-worth. I believe connection with others is important and while engaging in treatment, to view this as an opportunity for self-growth and addressing one's mental health so there is a sense of improvement with one's level of functioning, and quality of life.
