Cary Hamilton
The best description of what I do after 30 years of success is that I am a stress management expert. After having the life changing experience of studying with Monica McGoldrick, author of Ethnicity & Family Therapy, at Fordham University, my mother and I founded The Hamilton Practice in 1995. Working with survivors of childhood abuse and trauma in Harlem for a combined seventeen years, we were stunned by the miracles that unfolded as we applied the powers of connection and support. Using humor and insight to twist the kaleidoscope, I collaborate with clients, often incorporating tools from Pete Walker's groundbreaking book, Complex PTSD, to illuminate the process. An emotionally supportive therapeutic atmosphere with clear, consistent boundaries helps client get to the core of the problem and achieve mastery. Mastery means breakthroughs such that the client feels in control of or is no longer threatened by what were once paralyzing obstacles. Having learned the relevancy of my background, I share that I am of English and Indian descent with a third parent who trained me well, a Jewish stepfather. My mother left her body in 2021, so you will see only me when we meet, but you will be benefiting from the wisdom and synergy of two generations.
