Jackie Mellis
Parenting is one of the hardest and most fulfilling experiences that we can have, but it can sometimes feel like a constant battle. I have a deep respect for these complexities, and I would be honored to support you as a parent of an emotionally challenged child or teen. Teen clients that would be a good fit for me may be struggling with anxiety, mood disorders, low functioning autism, asperger’s disorder, peer relations, school issues, self- harm, self-image, family conflict, depression or life transitions. I have 30 plus years of experience with children and adolescents with mental health and behavioral challenges, including emotional disturbance, autism and special needs. I also serve adults with mood disorders and life adjustment challenges. I adjust my approach, depending on your individual need or comfort level. My goal is to create a safe space and then gently guide you through some inner work. Emotions enrich us and give us the depth of experience and meaning in our lives. At best we can allow our emotions to flow through us, allowing and learning from the experience, and releasing the emotion. But we all get stuck on certain emotions at times. Therapy is the process of unpacking those bags of stuck emotions, and developing healthier emotional expression, and a clearer and stronger self concept. I enjoy teaching emotional regulation strategies, coping skills and mindfulness. I work collaboratively with my clients and families to apply strategies, build resilience and personal empowerment. One of the strategies I teach to all ages is Heartmath® Interventions, which uses biofeedback technology (no purchase required) to teach and practice emotional regulation, psychological coherence and restructuring (resetting the emotional body). I use a cognitive behavioral approach for all ages, which focuses on reworking our thoughts, core beliefs and feelings, by better understanding how these affect our behavior and outcomes. I am also skilled in behavior management strategies for home and school. I have experience providing counseling to children and teens in school, home-based, and agency-based therapy settings. I also have experience with adult mental health counseling in agency and hospital settings. I was on the staff on St. Louis Children’s Hospital for several years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, specializing in child protection. I am eager to serve you, hear your concerns and provide more information about my practice.
