Susan Amory
Hello! I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and have been practicing since 2014. I have a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Radford University (1992), Master of Arts in Education from Norfolk State University (1997), and Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University (2015). I was a high school teacher for 21 years teaching students with special needs before beginning my career in clinical counseling. I currently work full time for Veteran Affairs and part time for Sondermind. I've had extensive instruction in treating trauma/PTSD and I am certified in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). As well, I am trained in Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT) and Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy for PTSD (CBCT-P). As an LPC, I specialize in supporting adolescent and adult clients experiencing difficulties with life transitions, career challenges, self-esteem, managing stress, identity exploration, depression and anxiety. I utilize person-centered, cognitive-behavioral, and strength based approaches with an emphasis on trauma informed care. I believe counseling should be collaborative as you are the expert on you - I like to meet clients where they are and tailor treatment to meet their individualized needs. I pride myself on being warm and direct, nonjudgmental, an empathic listener, and a therapist you can relate to (I'm as real as it gets!). Continuing your personal work is wonderful gift to yourself - Godspeed.
