About this course

The first five years are a critical period of development and receiving early intervention can support a healthy developmental trajectory. Clinicians who have had most of their experience working with older children, teens, or adults, may wonder how to even start with clinical care for our youngest patients. Children from birth to five years-old may be particularly challenging to engage in treatment, whether in-person or virtually. This course will illuminate best practices for engaging the youngest patients in therapy. Participants will learn creative techniques for sustaining child and family involvement in mental health services with considerations of care provision in-person and virtually. This course will help participants achieve child and family buy-in, build a safe therapeutic relationship with the young child, and empower the child to exercise their voice and choice. Cultural considerations and work with children with physical differences and neurodivergencies will be addressed. Case vignettes and practical applications will support participants with case conceptualization and treatment planning.
