While the population of those identifying as mixed race in the US is growing, the understanding and acceptance of the mixed race community is not. Talking about race and racial identity can make us feel anxious to “say the wrong thing,” but can be done directly in ways that are supportive and affirming.
In this course, you’ll learn how to help children (and their parents) navigate the complicated task of mixed race identity development. Topics include helping mixed race children gain confidence in their identity, and helping mixed race children and their families address negative reactions or hurtful race-based comments from family, school personnel or strangers in the grocery store. Discover the strengths of a mixed race identity, and help support the unique perspectives and experiences of those with mixed race backgrounds.
